Random Thoughts

I had another busy week, as I am sure all of you did too.  "Busy" seems to be the word used a lot to describe our lives, our society.  I worked a few extra hours at my part time job/ministry getting ready for our first Catholic Youth Ministry (CYM) activity and my first class with my new batch of 8th graders.  I am always amazed at how many hours it takes to get ready for an hour and a half program.  We had a great turn out and everyone seemed to have a good time!

Thursday, I left the rental at 4:15 a.m. to get to Wichita in time to take my dad (and mom) to Kansas Medical Center (a physician owned hospital) for his outpatient procedure.  His urologist was attempting to blast his kidney stone so he could pass the pieces and be done with the thing.  After the procedure, the doctor reported that the stone was "very big" and in a "very bad place".  He blasted it at the highest power and as many times as was safe but wasn't sure it was going to do the trick.  Dad is to set an appointment in two weeks time to have it x-rayed to see if  this procedure was successful.

While I was sitting in the waiting room I wrote a list of ten random thoughts.

1.  Here are a few things I am looking forward to at the new house:  a garage door opener,  an ice machine, a deck to sit on, a refrigerator with a light,  a washer and dryer*,  a bedroom big enough that I can open my nightstand drawer,  being done with the building of the house.  Boy,  do I sound spoiled or what?

*We gave our washer and dryer to Kayla and Lucas because we are getting new ones for the new house.  I couldn't stand to watch Kayla drag her laundry here every week during the last month of her pregnancy.  This was the first week since the first year of our marriage that I had to haul the laundry out.

2.  Holding a sleeping baby has got to be one of the simplest pleasures in life.

3.  God knew what he was doing when he created pineapple and bacon.

4.  What is the deal with all the big screen tvs in public places, restaurant, lobbies, hospital waiting rooms.  They are never on a station I want to watch.  Am I allowed to change the channel?  What is the proper etiquette?  You always come into the middle of a show/movie.  What is going on?  Can I ask someone who is in the room?  If there are two shows on two different tvs, which one do I watch?  The volume is usually just too low to hear it but two high so as to be distracting to conversation or an attempt at reading.  Really, can't we all go a few hours without that visual stimulation in our life?  Just asking?

5.  Why do people post.... "that moment when..."  Did I miss a secret message some where?

6.  That moment when you first know you are getting a cold...

7.  At the risk of offending someone, I am going to ask, "Why would we have an exception to the abortion law for rape?"  Is that child not a child?  Should that child be punished for the sins of his/her father?  Does committing the violent act of abortion heal the woman of the violent act of rape?  Granted,  it would take an enormous amount of courage and grace from our God to carry a baby conceived in the act of rape to full term and give him/her up for adoption.  I heard a speaker once who was adopted.  She never met her birth mom but knows that her mom was raped. It was an amazing story that kind of got me thinking.

8. Here are a few undeniable truths:  No one likes to be crabbed at.  Everyone likes to be appreciated.  No one wants to be inconvenienced.

9.  The favorite part of my job/ministry is working with all the wonderful catechists and youth ministry volunteers.  They are a great, fun-loving and flexible group of people.  Each of them inspires me in my faith.

10.  A rumbling  thunderstorm is one of my favorite sounds.  Vanilla is one of my favorite smells.

An update on the house:  The trim carpenter has left the building!  The painter is finished staining and varnishing the woodwork.   (The fumes are so bad right now I get a head ache just walking in the door.)  WGO and Tyler finished the steps to the deck.  WGO and Mr. Lackey have begun laying the wood floor.

No more hauling laundry out!

(Okay that afternoon filling all the balloons with water  by myself wasn't all that fun.)

Baby-q

Another week, another post.   It was one of those weeks in which WGO and I weren't home together very much.  He had a meeting on Tuesday.  I drove to Megan and Grady to meet Chad at Matfield Green.  (Does anyone know what happens when you turn around on the turnpike?)  Wednesday night I had a meeting at Church.  On Thursday,  both Gregg and I had a meeting--but not the same one.   When we gathered together for Fiesta Friday, complete with Coronas, we enjoyed a relaxing evening watching the Olympics and doing laundry. (When did I start doing laundry on Friday night?)  Ty and Laura, in town for a wedding, stopped by for a short visit.  The down time was short lived as AJ and I headed up to the Church for a youth group wedding cleanup at 10:45!

Saturday morning, WGO and I head north for a baby-q for Kayla and Lucas in his hometown.  "What is a baby-q?" you ask.  It is a combination between a bbq and a shower.  The Beisels joined us for the trek  north to Seneca, Kansas.  Lucas' mom and dad hosted the event.  Alice had prepared a great spread of food complete with a dessert buffet.  After the meal, the women headed inside for the opening of all the cute gifts for baby Lackey.  Some of them, but not all, were pink.

We spent the night with the Beisel's.  In the morning we went to Mass and out to breakfast and then headed home.  What I really enjoy about road trips, is the time it affords us to converse as a couple.  After a week of meetings it was just what the marriage ordered.

A Blessed Week

We had some special visitors last weekend.  Chad, Megan, and Grady were our guests at the rental.  It was great having them here.  I so enjoyed holding little Grady Mack.  Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, I wasn't able to spend as much time with them as I would have liked.

My 88 year old dad drove himself to the hospital last Thursday night suffering with a kidney stone.  He had surgery on Friday afternoon.  He went home on Sunday.... with a catheter.    It is amazing how tiring sitting around the hospital waiting to here from the doctor can be.  I am so blessed to have a sister nearby to share in taking care of our parents.  I am also thankful that my brother Kent was in town and could take a shift at the hospital.

I also had a meeting scheduled with my catechists on Saturday morning.  When you are in charge of the meeting and you scheduled it 3 months ago, you really can't just cancel it even if your grandson is in town.

Fortunately,  Megan and the baby stayed a couple extra days.  I took Monday off and Megan, Grady, and I spent the day with Kayla helping her fix up Hadley's nursery.  We made a little pit stop at  g.g.'s and g.pa's to show off the baby.

Another blessed week.  Another week closer to the big move.

Busyness

It has been  a little while since I last updated my blog.  Since I returned from my visit with my beautiful grandson in Topeka,  I have been playing catch up at work and at home.

Last week was Vacation Bible School at St. Mike's.  VBS week is just crazy but a lot of fun!  We had about 40 kids Kindergarten through 6th grade exploring scripture stories with song, games, science experiments,  drama, and even snacks.  I had a great group of adult and teen volunteers which made the work all the more enjoyable.   But, I will probably be hearing those songs in my brain for many weeks!

Following VBS on Friday, I headed to Salina for an overnight stay.  There were six of us from St. Mike's who attended the Catechist Conference there.  We had a great time and were re-energized for the coming year. Throw in three evening meetings to prepare for and attend as well as  registration for classes after all Masses and you have the recipe for a really hectic week at the office.

On the home front, my cat and my daughter  both had health issues.  Let's just say that Wille was have trouble finding the litter box.  Before WGO had her put down, we decided to rule out an infection which entailed a trip to the vet.  The cat is still alive and on antibiotics.

Kayla spent most of the week in the hospital with a urinary tract infection.   There was some concern that an infection could send her into premature labor.  Fortunately that didn't happen and she is home now with instructions to drink a lot and rest when tired. I spent Thursday afternoon at the office and Monday at the Lackey's cooking and cleaning.

Unfortunately when I have action-packed weeks such as these, I tend to eliminate the two things that I should probably step up: exercise and prayer.   It is so easy for me to rationalize that I need sleep more than I need to exercise or to pray.  Now I am trying to get back on tract!

The house is coming a long.  I still have hope that we might be moved in by my birthday at the end of August.  The trim carpenter has finished on the first floor.  The painters have moved in.  And the tile layer is making progress.
